Emissions trading will exist in Australia. It's only a matter of time

Despite the refusal of the big politicians in the federal governments in both countries to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, the state governments in the USA and Australia are finally realising that Global Warming is a very very big deal.

In Australia, by 2010, electricity companies in all 8 states would have to hold tradable permits to emit greenhouse gases.

Why cant it be sooner?

And even more NSW coal to be exported

The NSW Government is now taking public submissions on the proposed new Coal Export Terminal at Kooragang, in Newcastle Harbour. The CET would increase the capacity of the world's biggest coal port by 66 million tonnes per year, and is the major component of plans to double Newcastle coal exports.

You can make a submission against the proposal here

The Environmental Assessment for the new CET does not include an assessment of the greenhouse pollution from the 66 million tonnes of coal exported, or of the proliferation of new mines that the loader would allow.

New Climate Change Website

www.climatemovement.org.au

NCC has begun creating an exciting new website to link up the growing movement on climate change in Australia. It aims to provide a point where people can see who else is active, what they are doing and how they themselves can join the movement. The site is skeletal at the moment with much to be added such as downloads, events, blogs, action alerts, a map (where groups once registered automatically appear) and the ability for groups to share their photos and ideas. We encourage you to 'join the movement' and register your group..

Quite a few groups are starting up so this is a way to resource the growing movement and let people know they're not alone!

Nuclear Powered Poll

Is There Any Way You Would Accept Nuclear Power Stations in Australia as a Means to Reduce Greenhouse Gass Emissions?

o No, never!
o The problem of waste disposal needs to be solved first.
o Safety issues must be addressed completely before I will support the idea.
o Both waste and safety issues must be addressed completely before I agree.
o Nuclear power stations will not reduce greenhouse gasses enough to take the risk.
o I think that they may be a part of the solution but only hand in hand with renewable energy and waste reduction.
o Yes, let's start building them NOW!!
